How scholarships are helping Europe to become more sustainable
Scholarships hold the key to supporting talented young people from across the world to study at leading universities and play their part in solving the planet’s most difficult problems. That’s the view of Joanna Siembida from Poland, a postgraduate student of International Public Management and Policy (IMP) at EUR, whose ambition is to support countries in making the transition to renewable energy. She speaks from experience as she has been awarded a scholarship from the Erasmus Trust Fund to fund her tuition and living expenses in Rotterdam.

Mariia Poretskova:
Far from her home in Ukraine, Mariia Poretskova is determined to support her country
Although Mariia Poretskova is making the most of her year as a postgraduate economics student in Rotterdam, her heart is still in Ukraine. Studying at EUR would have been impossible without her scholarship: “My parents’ business has been badly affected by the war, their building was damaged and there were fewer customers. Support from the Erasmus Trustfonds has been crucial to enable me to come to the Netherlands and it has relieved the financial burden on my parents and my family.”

Vanessa Nethania Parka from Indonesia will never forget the day she found out she had been awarded a fully funded scholarship for a Masters in Commercial and Company Law at Erasmus University Rotterdam. “Winning a place at one of the best universities in Europe has brought me so many opportunities. It would have been impossible for me to come here without this generous scholarship to meet the cost of my tuition and living expenses. Rest assured, I’m making the most of my time in Rotterdam.

Mai Phuong Vu:
Running to give the next generation of international students the opportunity to study at EUR
Growing up in Vietnam, Mai Phuong Vu dreamed of studying abroad, but she knew the cost of fees and travel would make it impossible. A change in career prompted her to investigate possibilities and now, thanks to a generous scholarship from the Erasmus Trustfonds, she has embarked on a Masters in Media and Creative Industries at Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communications. “Although it’s been quite a while since I last ran 10k, I’m looking forward to the challenge. I’m an ambassador for scholarships and want to help more young people like me to go to one of the best universities in Europe,” she says.
